A statement from Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister

“Almost every second word coming from persons analyzing our economy is the need for improvements in productivity.  Increasing efficiency in all areas in the public and private sector… in industry, in agriculture, really, in everything we do.  The most recent institution highlighting this continuing area of weakness was the IMF after a crucial evaluation of the Dominica economy prior to the introduction of the country’s stabilization measures.  Clearly, to face the challenges ahead with some degree of hope and confidence there is need to put into place an institution which will focus on issues of productivity, efficiency, work ethics, modern management and related matters, both in the public and private sectors.  And to do so in a non-bureaucratic manner.

I am pleased with the initiative to establish a National Institute for Productivity.  It represents a modest attempt to begin to seriously tackle the continuing quandary of low productivity in our country.  It has the support of leading figures in the private sector and I am confident that the other social partners, the Trade Unions, will also support this effort since higher productivity ultimately means higher incomes for all involved.  The public sector remains equally committed to this laudable goal and government is in full support of the initiative establish the NIP.  It is a crucial facility at this stage of our nation’s development.  I encourage friendly countries and donor agencies to signify their support for the NIP by giving it the financial backing for its early establishment and initial operations.”

Roosevelt Skerrit
Prime Minister
